The Foundation Máximo Soriano Jiménez, supports research and activities addressed to advancement of knowledge in Infectious Diseases and AIDS.

Since its creation, the Foundation Board has given support to research projects in the field of Infectious Diseases and AIDS which have been developed in Spain and in several European and African countries. Such projects have generated the publication of more than 50 scientific papers, 70% of them in international journals, and contributions in about 30 medical books related to these subjects. In addition, the Board has given grants for the training in Infectious Diseases and has donated more than 200 specific economic aids for research in the field.

Maximo Soriano Foundation also co-sponsors the AIDS Master's Degree of the University of Barcelona (six Masters, the first in 1991).

MAXIMO SORIANO JIMENEZ GRANT

The Fundación Privada Máximo Soriano Jiménez awards a scholarship of 14,425 euros annually for training in Infectious Diseases. The bases of this scholarship are the following:

1. Candidates must have a university degree in Biochemistry, and a pre-doctorate in Immunology to participate in the research project: “Innate Factors of Host Restriction against the HIV Virus”

2.  Candidates must send the documents mentioned below to the Secretary's office of the Fundación Privada Máximo Soriano Jiménez (Ronda General Mitre, 147 2º4ª - 08022 BARCELONA - To the attention of Ms. Carmen Mensa, Tel. and Fax 93-4514438):

2A) Introduction letter.

2B)  A letter explaining your motivation for carrying out a basic research project on AIDS (a maximum of 3 DIN A4 sheets of paper).

3. The application deadline is the 15 th of July of 2005 . The decision will be communicated to applicants by 30 th July , to begin the scholarship on 1 st September of 2005.

4. Application for this Scholarship implies total acceptance of the conditions upon which it is based. The Board of Trustees of the Fundación Privada Máximo Soriano Jiménez , which may be advised by experts on the subject, will choose the person to be awarded the scholarship, after evaluating all of the applications received. Candidates may be asked for a personal interview. The final decision may not be appealed. The scholarship may be declared vacant.

5. The scholarship recipient must undergo his/her training in the Infectious Disease Service of Hospital Clínic from 1 st September of 2005 until 1 st of September of 2006 , participating actively in all of the Service's attendance, teaching, and research activities. The scholarship student will receive the scholarship in 12 monthly payments. At the end of the training period, he or she will have to present a report on the activities carried out (consisting of no more than 10 DIN A4 pages). This scholarship may be extended a year longer if the Board of Trustees considers that the scholarship recipient has reached the goals set out and the Board considers it necessary.

ECONOMIC AIDS

The Foundation offers specific economic aids for the same objectives as the grant and based on the same requirements mentioned above with the exception of aspect number 1. In this case any health worker could apply for it as long as his/her project fulfills the Foundation's aims.
